The New York Mets (34-35) put Chris Capuano (5-6 4.40) to try to win the first game of the series versus the Los Angeles Angels who are putting Joel Pineiro (2-3 4.03) on the mound.

Pineiro hasn't got a win in his last six starts. He has been looking for his 100th win of his career, as he is at 99 wins.

Capuano has allowed one run or fewer in three of his last four starts.

Jose Reyes is batting .583 in 12 at bats in the last 5 years.

Jose also leads the MLB with a .395 home batting average. The Mets are now starting their home stand, looking to play well versus the American League.

Only two of the nine starting Angels, Bobby Abreu and Tori Hunter have faced Capuano.

Last meeting against the Angels was in 2008, when Willie Randolph was fired.

Before the game, in Queens, it was pouring and there were also strikes of lighting and thunder.

Mets look to regain .500 and start the home stand off well.

Mets game was delayed 30 minutes due to rain. Start time was 7:40.

In the second inning, Howie Kendrick hit a double to right center field with 1 out. Rookie Mark Trumbo then smacked a fly ball to center, which was caught, but moved Kendrick over to third base. Speedy Peter Bourjos hit a hard groundball to third base, Justin Turner threw the ball way over Daniel Murphy, the 1st baseman, and Kendrick scored with the first run of the game. Bourjos moved to second, and the score was 1-0. After an intentional walk to Jeff Mathis, Capuano was able to get pitcher Joel Pineiro to ground out to short stop to end the top of the 2nd inning at 1-0.

Murphy coming up in the 2nd inning, smacked a fastball right in the middle of the pate to deep left field after taking an awkward hop off the wall, ending up with a triple. Angel Pagan has been hitting well with runners in scoring position, and hit an opposite field single to left field, scoring the first run for the Mets, making the score 1-1. Bay then hit a little ground ball to short stop, after throwing out Pagan, Kendrick over threw Trumbo, and it went over his head into the stands. Bay ended up at second with 1 out. With 1 out, Paulino hit a check swing to Pineiro, the pitcher, and that kept Bay from moving as Paulino was out at first. Tejada was intentionally walked for the pitcher Capuano with 2 outs. Capuano struck out on 3 pitches, and the score was 1-1 after two.

Into the third, Capuano again struggled, Izturis singled and then Aybar sacrificed himself with a bunt, to bring Izturis to second. Hunter muscled out a single into right field, just out of Tejada's reach. Izturis, waiting to see the ball drop, went to third base. The struggling Vernon Wells, laced a single into left field, miss played by Reyes, and Izturis gave the Angels the lead, 2-1. Hunter went to third base. Howie Kendrick, then hit a ground ball to Reyes, who stepped on second and threw out Kendrick to retire the side.

In the bottom of the third, With Reyes grounding out, Turner walked, and then Beltran ripped a drive off of the pitcher Pineiro's knew/thigh area for an infield single. With two men on, and the hot batter Daniel Murphy up, Murphy hit a fly ball out to center field. It was all down to Pagan with two men on and two outs, and he hit an RBI single to right field, scoring Turner, and moving Beltran to third base. The score was 2-2, and at that point, Pagan had both runs batted in. With Jason Bay up with runners at the corners, he lined one to right field, but was caught by Tori Hunter. The score remained at 2-2.

In the 4th inning, Ronny Paulino led the inning off with a pulled double hopping all the way to the fence. Ruben Tejada was beaned on the second pitch, and that led to two men on with Capuano up. With Capuano up to sacrifice bunt, he struck out leaving both runners on 1st and 2nd. Reyes on the first pitch hit a ground ball to Kendrick, the second baseman, for the third straight time, going to second first to get Tejada, Izturis' throw was not in time to get Reyes. Runners on the corners, and the best hitter with runners in scoring position, Justin Turner, and he struck out on 4 pitches, retiring the side and keeping the score at two a piece.

With two outs in the 5th inning,  Howie Kendrick hit a single, and then Trumbo hit an infield single, which was more like a Jose Reyes error. With Bourjos up, he smacked a ground ball down the left field line, scoring Kendrick, allowing Trumbo to get to third and standing at second with a double was Bourjos. Jeff Mathis was walked, to make bases loaded for Joel Pineiro, the pitcher. He struck out on four pitches, and that retired the side, allowing 1 run, which shouldn't have happened, if it wasn't for Reyes' "error/single".

With Parnell coming in for Capuano in the 7th inning, he let up an Izturis double down the right field line. Aybar then hit a small hopper to short stop, and Reyes threw him out, allowing Izturis to scoot to third base. Tori Hunter was able to slap an opposite end single, to bring home Izturis, and the score was 4-2. The Mets were able to get Vernon Wells to ground out into a double play, and the Mets were down by 2, 4-2.

Scott Downs, in to relieve Pineiro in the 8th inning, let a Jason Bay single to short stop. On the throw, Aybar threw the ball away into the dugout to give Bay an extra base. Ronny Paulino, who was hitting the whole day, smacked a double to right center field, scoring Bay to cut the score to 4-3. Jason Pridie came in to pinch hit for very slow Paulino. After the double, Tejada hit a ground ball to first base, moving Pridie to first base with 2 outs. Scott Hairston came up to bat for Bobby Parnell with Pridie on third and two outs in a 1 run game. He struck out on a nasty curveball in the dirt.

Youngster closer, Jordan Walden came into the 9th inning to record his 16th save against the top of the order. Walking Reyes and Turner, Walden struck out Beltran, Murphy, and Pagan to end the game at 4-3 Angels.

Capuano (5-7 4.29 ERA) left after six innings of work, allowing 8 hits, 3 runs (2 earned), walking 3, striking out 5 with 92 pitches.

Joel Piniero (3-3 3.92) left after six 1/3 innings, allowing 6 hits, 3 walks, 2 earned runs, striking out 4, pitching only 87 pitches. He got his 100th career win, the fourth Puerto Rican to do so.

Lets just say this, Jordan Walden has nasty stuff. He can throw 100mph and can throw 80mph sliders into the dirt, that look like strikes at first. The Angels have something special in Walden.

The Mets are now 2 games out of .500 after losing tonight.

Jose Reyes had his 14th game where he didn't get a hit, he has played 67 games.

Ruben Tejada has been cold as of late, with again no hits tonight.

Ronny Paulino and Angel Pagan were the only hitters for the Mets tonight, Pagan had two runs batted in, and Paulino had 2 doubles, and 1 run batted in.

Mets were 3 for 16 with runners in scoring position.

The Mets are now showing signs that they need Ike Davis and David Wright back in the field as the Mets have been playing awful in the field the last couple of games.

Tomorrow, Mike Pelfrey will be on the mound versus a very good pitcher in Dan Haren. Mets need to win Tomorrow so they have a chance at a series win, and have a good start on their home stand against the AL. Overall, the Mets had chances, but couldn't capitalize, and the Mets lost a very heartbreaking game.
